Tree Cutting: Special Township Workshop Meeting Wednesday August 5th

West Amwell Township government is having a storm water management & tree cutting ordinance special workshop involving a large portion of the overall municipal government at 7pm tomorrow night, Wednesday August 5th at the West Amwell Township Municipal Building.

The meeting will be including:

• The Township Committee

• Environmental Commission

• Land Use Board

• Open Space Committee

• Agricultural Advisory Committee

The purpose of the workshop is to discuss potential tree-cutting and forest management ordinances in relation to the Stormwater Quality Ordinance revisions being contemplated by the Township Committee.

The broad impetus behind these changes are State-level changes in storm water regulations.

This is a more complex issue than it may appear on its face. On the one hand, tree-cutting permits or similar rules may seem like a no-brainer to some, and nearby towns like Hopewell Township and Lambertville have tree cutting ordinances on the books. Certainly issues like what is happening at 25 Hewitt Road come to mind here as well.

But on the other hand, West Amwell is neither Hopewell nor Lambertville, and we should ensure that any ordinances match the realities of living specifically in West Amwell Township. What is good for a 1.3 square mile tiny hamlet like Lambertville may not be in the best interests of West Amwell.
