New Township Committee Makeup

The Township Committee (TC) has been relatively slow to change in makeup from a historical perspective. For many years now it was an entirely Republican Board. It was a 3-member body until 2017, when we officially increased to 5 members. This significantly lightened the work load for TC members and the committees they needed to liaise with.

As it turns out, the increase to 5 members also increased the chance for political competition.

In 2023, Meghan Hudson was sworn in as the first Democrat to serve on the committee in over a decade. In 2025, Robin Deal was sworn in as the second Democrat on the Board to join the 3 Republicans, Bob Balaam, Jim Cally, and Gary Hoyer.

The change appears to have energized voters on both sides of the aisle, and the twice-monthly public Township Committee Meetings have been uncharacteristically crowded as a result. Hot button issues as such as PFAS contamination, school district construction and finances, and the GMNJ cannabis facility will test how this new board adjusts to the change.

The next Township Committee meeting will be held Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at 7:30pm at the Township Municipal Building.
